Waller Capital Partners, LLC announced today that it has established an office in San Francisco, where it will focus on West Coast-centric clients and industries, including Communications Technology, Entertainment & Digital Media. It also announced several new additions to its growing team, hiring Mathew Dahl, Michael McHugh and James Pierce, as well as promoting Linda Bailey to Controller & Chief Administrative Officer.
Mr. Dahl joins the firm as a Managing Director based in San Francisco, where he will lead Waller’s efforts in the Communications Technology sector. He was formerly with Banc of America / Merrill Lynch, where he led Communications Technologies coverage, working with companies who provide systems, software and components for applications in communications, enterprise IT and consumer electronics. Prior to BofA/Merrill, Matt was with Solomon Brothers, where he helped build the Technology Group and continued with the firm after its transformation to Citigroup. Recent M&A transactions include Brocade’s $2.6bn acquisition of networking vendor Foundry Networks; the sale of telecom components supplier Avanex to Bookham; Motorola’s acquisition of Netopia; CommScope’s $2.5bn acquisition of Andrew Corp.; Barloworld’s sale of Melles Griot to CVI Laser; HP’s acquisition of Snapfish; the sale of the VoIP business for UP Technology (a Beijing-based start-up backed by Doll Capital); Avant!’s $777mm sale to Synopsis; and Avanex’s acquisition of Alcatel’s and Corning’s telecom optics businesses.
Garrett Baker, President of Waller Capital, said “We are thrilled to be expanding into a sector with so many dynamic, growing companies in need of sophisticated financial advice. There are countless connections between Communications Technology suppliers and the cable & telecom service providers which constitute Waller Capital’s traditional customer base. Matt is one of the brightest, most-respected bankers in the industry, and we believe that his knowledge and background will enable us to expand our business into new areas, while also improving how we serve clients in our existing sectors.”
Mr. McHugh will be a Managing Director focusing on M&A, capital raising & restructuring assignments for Radio & TV Broadcasters. He will work closely with Michael Anderson, who joined Waller Capital last month as part of the firm’s expanding coverage of the Broadcasting sector. Mr. McHugh will also handle restructurings and special situations in other media sectors, as well as initiate and lead Waller’s coverage of Movie Theater operators. During his career, he has invested more than $2.0bn of principal in media, communications & entertainment companies and has more than 14 years of principal investing and restructuring experience. Prior to Waller Capital, Mr. McHugh was a Managing Director with MCG Capital where he invested and managed a portfolio of over $200 million of equity and mezzanine investments and handled restructurings and turnarounds for MCG's portfolio companies. Prior to MCG, Michael was with GE Capital, where worked in various capacities including workout, portfolio management, origination and underwriting of GE Capital's media & communications portfolio.
Michael Anderson, head of Waller Capital’s Broadcasting Practice, said “I am extremely pleased that Michael McHugh is joining our team. His extensive network of relationships and broad spectrum of transaction experience will greatly enhance our practice. Waller Capital has known Michael for more than a decade, and we are confident that his addition will help position us as the leading advisor to the Broadcasting community.”
Mr. Pierce joins Waller Capital from Credit Suisse’s Mergers & Acquisitions group, where he focused on Latin America. He has significant experience in South America, including transactions in the cable industry, and will assist Waller Capital on both domestic and Latin American assignments.
Ms. Bailey joined Waller Capital in 1992 and since then has been responsible for the firm’s day-to-day financial, administrative & operational oversight. Prior to joining Waller Capital, she held senior operational and administrative roles at Forstmann Little & Co., and The Fairchild Corporation.
